Acupuncture and Functional Dry Needling

Acupuncture and Functional Dry Needling

Functional Dry Needling brings lasting relief for a broad range of neuromuscular dysfunction.

Following injuries or other degenerative processes, many patients suffer from muscular tightness and spasm. This often leads to compression and irritation of the nerves exiting the spine. When these nerves are irritated, they cause a protective spasm of all the muscles to which they are connected. This natural response from the body attempting to protect itself frequently results in referral pain.

This referral pain can lead to secondary dysfunction such as carpal tunnel, tendonitis, osteoarthritis, decreased mobility, chronic pain, and a range of other disorders. This scenario can be difficult to treat because the true source of the problem is "hidden" and undiagnosed. For these patients, standard treatments are often ineffective resulting in continued limitations and chronic pain.

Dry needling is a highly effective treatment, unequaled in identifying and eliminating these referring or "hidden" sources of neuromuscular disorder. The treatment involves identifying the source of the pain and advancing a small filament needle into the related muscles, eliciting a small twitch response and then relaxing of the muscle.

The identification and stimulation of these trigger points can "reboot" the muscle to alleviate both the original problem area as well as the secondary pain. Many patients experience dramatic pain relief and improved function in just a few treatments often with lasting relief.

Complete Concussion Management

Complete Concussion Management

Practitioners at The Physio Center are trained in a comprehensive program that helps diagnose and treat any person who has sustained a concussion. This program also includes season baseline testing for athletes of any level. The clinic is recognized as an offical provider of Complete Concussion Management.

Complete Concussion Management is the largest network of specialized concussion clinics in all of Canada. Athletes tested through our program can have preferential access to any CCMI certified clinic across the country. All of these clinics have received the same training, are conducting the same tests, and are using the exact same equipment. This means that if an athlete is baseline tested at this clinic and they are out of town for a tournament and they get a possible concussion, they can walk into a CCMI certified clinic and be tested and compared against their own baseline.

Concussions have become the focus for both professional and amateur athletes around the world, and we will continue to be at the forefront of concussion diagnosis, management, and rehabilitation with this collaboration. We utilize a comprehensive, multi-model approach to concussions based on current advances in concussion research. Complete Concussion Management practitioners are continuously updated on current research and treatments in order to manage these injuries properly and safely to ensure adequate recovery, therefore limiting the risk of further injury and long term brain damage.

The biggest concern surrounding concussions comes from the energy deficit that occurs in the brain following injury. When the brain is in this low energy state, it has been well established that the brain is extremely vulnerable to additional trauma, where even smaller impacts can lead these to another concussion; and these second concussions can cause severe brain injuries with potentially permanent or fatal outcomes. The problem is that symptoms do not coincide with brain recovery. The only way to know when the brain has fully recovered and out of this "vulnerable period" is to compare current brain function to when the individual was healthy; this is what is known as a baseline test.

A baseline test is a battery of tests that measures every area of brain function that could potentially become affected following a concussion (more than computers are needed). The reason that the test is termed "baseline" is because it is done BEFORE the athlete gets injured. In order to know when an athlete has fully recovered, we first have to know where they were when they were fully healthy. Without having this information, there is no way to truly when an athlete has fully recovered and is safe to return to their sport.

* If any sport associations, coaches, trainers or parents have questions or would like additional information, please contact Heather at the clinic. We can arrange to have an information seminar or electronically send information of the Complete Concussion Management program to anyone who requests it.

Custom orthotics are manufactured by two different techniques. The 3D foam cast technique records the shape of the foot at rest in a non-weight bearing position. In combination with the cast impression, a metascan software that has visual and biomechanical analysis capabilities using dynamic, static and postural scans is used to create a biomechanical scan. This digital model collects a person's three dimensional plantar foot anatomy which is extrapolated from pressure data through an application of mathematical models. The pressure data is collected from dynamic scans of three steps of each foot from the pressure mat through the stance phase of gait (contact, mid-stance and propulsion).

The Footmaxx manufacturing facility is located in located in Roanoke, Virginia, and is one of the largest custom foot orthotic laboratories in North America. The clinical services department employs a team of highly trained pedorthists who supervice all orthotic prescriptions.

Footmaxx orthothics are custom crafted using semi-flexible, semi-rigid, and rigid proprietary blends of polyproplene, graphite, carbon fiber, cushioning layers, accommodative cushioning, and other similar materials that are commonly used to make custom orthotics manufactured in podiatric laboratories. There are over 20 steps in the fabrication of Footmaxx biomechanical orthotic devices.
